Who are We?

The Royal Order of Scotland is among the most historic Orders within Freemasonry, tracing its regal roots back over 700 years to Robert the Bruce.

Tradition holds that Robert the Bruce conferred knighthoods on Freemasons who aided his victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. These knights are recognised as the first members of the Order.

The Order spread internationally in the 18th century, particularly in France, before declining amid persecution of Freemasons. By the mid‑19th century, however, it began to flourish again.

The oldest existing Provincial Grand Lodge was established in Sweden during this period. In a Masonic building in Stockholm, a Tower of Refreshment was uncovered—still used today in awarding one of the Order’s two degrees—symbolising the enduring connection between Sweden and the Royal Order of Scotland.

Joining the Royal Order of Scotland

The Royal Order of Scotland admits members exclusively from within Freemasonry. To be considered, you must be recommended by two members of the Order, who will assess your suitability before inviting you to apply.
